The Four-Year Rule: Claim Your 2022 Tax Back Before 31 December 2026

by | Nov 4, 2026 | Tax | 0 comments

You have until 31 December 2026 to claim back any tax you overpaid in 2022. After that date, Revenue’s four-year rule closes the door and the money is gone for good. This guide explains what the rule means, what most people forget to claim, and how to make your claim on myAccount or ROS before the deadline.

What is the four-year rule?

The four-year rule sets a time limit on refunds. You can only claim back tax for the last four years. Revenue’s own wording is clear: claims for 2022 must be made by 31 December 2026.

The rule works the same way every year:

Tax yearLast day to claim a refund
202231 December 2026
202331 December 2027
202431 December 2028
202531 December 2029

The rule applies to PAYE workers and to people who file a self-assessment return. It covers unclaimed tax credits, reliefs and any tax deducted in error.

What you may still be able to claim for 2022

Most refunds come from credits and reliefs people did not know about. Check this list against your 2022:

  • Health expenses: doctor and consultant fees, prescriptions and some dental work, at 20%.
  • Rent Tax Credit: 2022 was the first year of the credit, worth up to €500 per person for rent paid that year.
  • Remote working relief: 30% of your electricity, heating and broadband costs for the days you worked from home.
  • Flat-rate expenses: fixed allowances for jobs such as nurses, teachers, shop workers and tradespeople.
  • Tuition fees: relief on qualifying third-level and some training course fees.
  • Home Carer, Dependent Relative or Single Person Child Carer credits if your family situation fit the rules that year.
  • Tax paid in error: for example on emergency tax, or two jobs with credits split badly.

You need receipts or records for what you claim. Revenue can ask for them, so keep them for six years.

How to claim back 2022 tax as a PAYE worker

  1. Log in to Revenue myAccount.
  2. Go to PAYE Services, then Review your tax.
  3. Choose Request a Statement of Liability for 2022, or open your Income Tax Return for 2022 if one is already there.
  4. Add each credit and relief you are owed, then submit.
  5. Revenue issues a statement and pays any refund into the bank account on your record.

Repeat the same steps for 2023, 2024 and 2025 while you are logged in. It often takes less than an hour for all four years. Our tax refund guide and tax credits guide walk through each screen.

How to claim if you are self-assessed

If you file a Form 11, you claim by amending your 2022 return on ROS. The amended return must reach Revenue by 31 December 2026. Common reasons self-employed people and landlords overpaid in 2022 include:

  • Rental expenses left off the return, such as RTB fees, repairs and mortgage interest.
  • Capital allowances on furniture, equipment or a van not claimed.
  • Pension contributions that could have been set against 2022 income.
  • Preliminary tax paid that was more than the final bill.

What happens after 31 December 2026?

Any 2022 refund you have not claimed is lost. Revenue will not repay it, even if the overpayment was its own mistake. The four-year limit also works the other way in your favour: in most cases Revenue can only raise an assessment for the last four years too, unless there was careless or deliberate behaviour.

Does claiming a refund trigger an audit?

No. Claiming credits you are entitled to is routine. Revenue processes millions of PAYE reviews each year. Keep your receipts, claim only what is real, and you have nothing to worry about.

Frequently asked questions

How far back can I claim tax back in Ireland?

Four years. In 2026 you can claim for 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.

What is the deadline to claim a 2022 tax refund?

31 December 2026. Revenue must receive your claim or amended return by that date.

Can I claim if I have left Ireland?

Yes. You can still use myAccount or ask an agent to claim for you. Overseas workers often leave money behind from their last year in Ireland.

Can an accountant claim on my behalf?

Yes. Once you link your record to a tax agent, they can file the claim for you. Our guide to the Revenue agent link form explains how.

Do I pay a fee to claim?

Claiming yourself through myAccount is free. If you use an accountant, ask for the fee up front. Fuchsia Bell charges a fixed fee, never a percentage of your refund. See our accountant fees.
